The last Wednesday of August was Kanika’s first day of classes at Hampton University. She was looking forward to getting into her own routine away from her father’s house. Kanika drove alone, even though her father had promised he’d take her. She pictured her mother waiting for her when she got home, wanting a complete rundown of all her classes like she had on Kanika’s first day of high school. But she was on her own now. There was no mother to brag about her good grades or smooth out the rough edges in her life. She had to have her own back from now on. It was on her to do her best to make herself happy, and no one else. She wanted to make her mother happy in spirit as she did in the flesh.
At noon, Kanika was sitting in Freshman Composition: Arts and Culture, thinking about how it would be at New York University, where she had also been accepted. Tyrell would pick her up from school; they would go to BBQ’s and then back home to make love. But she had to admit to herself that with Tyrell’s lifestyle she’d still be doing a lot on her own. Besides to empower herself, she thought, maybe that was why her mama had opened the strip club, to give her something to do. Kanika looked around at the black and brown faces attentively listening to a lecture by an astute gray-haired black professor with thick-rimmed glasses. Rows of green lawn and the lush leaves from trees waved to her from outside the window. There were no police sirens or skyscrapers blocking the view of the cloudless turquoise sky. It was peaceful, and so was she.
After class, Kanika stood in the long, winding line in the school cafeteria waiting to order her Burger King combo when a girl in a red jersey dress that begged her thighs for mercy walked up to her.
“Excuse me, but who does your hair?” she asked.
Kanika looked behind her, not sure if the short but shapely girl was talking to someone else. In New York, people didn’t just kick it to anybody like that.
“Your shit is like da bomb. It’s so black and shiny. Do you go to Sally & June’s?”
Kanika flipped her hair off her shoulders, somewhat happy that someone had spoken to her. “I got it done in New York.”
“Girl, it just looks so natural and wavy,” the girl said, walking around Kanika, fascinated by her tresses. “Are those D & G jeans?”
Kanika nodded.
“Everywhere I go, they don’t have my size.” She put out her hand. “I’m Shanae.”
“Hi, Shanae. My name is Kanika.” Kanika diverted her eyes back up to the menu. Shanae’s hair was atrocious, with purple streaks and in an outdated French-roll style with puffy roots. Back home, Kanika thought, she would not be caught dead with a chick like this.
“So,” Shanae said, standing beside Kanika. “You new around here?”
“I guess, but aren’t we all, since we’re freshmen?” Kanika smiled.
“Well, I mean you said you from New York.
